shuffle, shuffle...
This little old lady asked me to help her cross the street today. She was worried about all the ice and snow. Despite my initial reaction (”What the fuck is this? 1955?”) I helped her across the street. How nice of me, right? I was feeling pretty charitable and gracious afterwards. That lasted for about 30 seconds until some old guy with a cane wound up in front of me on a crowded sidewalk, walking at about the pace of Tim Conway in those old Carol Burnett Show skits.
”MOVE IT, PAPPY!!
My charitability and graciousness come in very tiny, well-defined “bursts”!

maybe it's one of those cool 'mission impossible' face masks...
There is this student in my Astronomy class today, sitting all the way in the back who looks more than a little like Tom Cruise. A youngish, pre-braces, post-Risky-Business... pre Nicole-Kidman but post-Top-Gun Tom Cruise. And when I say "more than a little" I mean...well... a LOT like Tom Cruise. Enough that when we make eye contact during class it kinda freaks me out.
"Oh SHIT... Tom Fucking Cruise is in my Astronomy class!!"
I find it terribly distracting. I mean, imagine how bad it would be if I was a WOMAN. (Or gay even.)

re: glistening white stuff....
I will say one thing about my iPod... it sure makes shoveling snow a lot more pleasant. Good LOUD music... I was able to do the whole driveway, with 12”-14” of snow, without even taking a break. I usually take at least one break, sometimes two. It’s a long, steep driveway, and I’m old and out of shape. So it was nice to have a little added source of energy.
I love my iPod, but there is one thing about it that bugs me...
Earbuds.
You know those things... the minimalist evolution of headphones... little padded speaker doohickers that you cram in your ear? I hate those fucking things. I always have. I can NEVER get them to stay in. I twist them and turn them and tilt them... nothing works. Do I have, like, a weirdly shaped earhole or something? Can other people wear these things without CONSTANTLY fucking with them? It drives me crazy. And even worse, the right one falls out WAY more than the left one. Is it because I move my right arm more than my left? Or is it because my ears are asymmetrical? It could be. I’ve never actually SEEN my ears... you know... “head on”. I’m tempted to grab my digital camera, photograph both of my ears and compare them in Photoshop – just to get to the bottom of this thing once and for all.
And you might ask – well, Dave... why the hell don’t you just chuck the earbuds and plug in your old headphones to your iPod? Because it’s an iPod! And the way you know that someone has an iPod are the little white earbud cords coming out of their pocket. And I’m far too appearance-conscious to abandon the status factor that accompanies iPod ownership. I know... it’s sick.
One other winter-related-iPod story. I was walking from my office to the subway on Monday, and I put on my iPod for the short (one long-block) walk. And how cold was it in Manhattan on Monday? Well, during that short walk, the rubber insulation of the cords to my earbuds FROZE and lost all their elasticity. You could bend the cords and they would hold their shape. This is what happened to the O-rings in the space shuttle Challenger’s solid rocket boosters, by the way... the 18th anniversary of that was yesterday or today or something. Just a bit of frozen-rubber trivia.
Anyway... I think that’s all I have to say on that matter. I’m on the train, Thursday morning, heading in for my first Astronomy class. It meets once a week, Thursday mornings from 9:00 to 11:40 or something crazy like that. It’s fucking insane. It’s like planning for three classes all at once. It’ll take a while to get used to feeling out that much time and planning for it. Right now I’m just treating it like it was TWO classes, with a brief “interlude”. I should also probably try to t-a-l-k... m-o-r-e... s-l-o-w-l-y... than I usually do.
The thing that’s bugging me today is that I didn’t get a chance to check out the classroom yesterday, and it’s a classroom I’ve never taught in before. I hate going in blind like that. I don’t even know the board situation as far as wipe-vs.-chalk. It’s this kind of uncertainty that unsettles me. Yet another tiny glimpse into my neuroses...
All for now. Time to decide on a HW assignment to go with the first lecture.

snowstorms and stupidity...
The University is open today. Fuckers. I don’t know WHO makes this decision, but I’m gonna find out and send them a letter. EVERY public school in the city is closed... the buses, subways, and trains are ALL experiencing delays, but....eh... let’s just let classes run as scheduled. Well... fuck them, I stayed home today. I feel bad for all the students who are going to see that school is open, trudge their way to class, and see that it’s cancelled, but... you know what? The last time this happened, only half of the students bothered to show up anyway. But I am not risking my ass driving in a foot of snow. What are they gonna do, fire me? Go for it. I’ll move to Alabama right now. (Today’s high in Mobile... 50º)

that’s the news and i am outta here...
I TiVo’d the new Dennis Miller show on CNBC last night, and watched it today. And what I’ve discovered is this – if you take Dennis Miller and take away the “funny” and put him in charge of a news show, what you wind up with is an obnoxious Libertarian prick, and an excruciating hour of television. Even during the little middle section where he comments on the news in the style of his old SNL news or his HBO show... without a studio audience even the GOOD jokes fall flat, and the BAD ones hit the floor with an embarrassing THUD and a trickle of nervous laughter from the crew. Painful.
And that’s not even to mention that his politics have drifted far enough to the right that I no longer agree with much of what he says. Shit, if I want to watch somebody unfunny spout politics that I disagree with, I’ll watch the fucking O’Reilly Factor or something.
The Doc's advice...? For fake news that is topical AND funny... stick with "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart".

Security ALERT - 1/27/04
W32/MyDoom Worm
Considered to potentially be one of the worst and quickest spreading threats in recent months, MyDoom should be addressed immediately.
OVERVIEW: MyDoom is a virus that spreads both by email and over the Kazaa file-sharing network. The mass mailing version spoofs the sender name of its messages so that they appear to have been sent by different users instead of the actual users on infected machines.
While the body of the email varies, it usually includes what appears to be an error message, such as: "The message contains Unicode characters and has been sent as a binary attachment." The icon used by the file tries to make it appear as if the attachment is a text file that the users' machine seems unable to read
IMPACT: W32/MyDoom drops itself to the System folder under the name taskmon.exe. It also drops a file named shimgapi.dll, which is a backdoor keystroke program loaded by the worm to record everything being typed, including username and passwords. The backdoor allows outsiders to connect to a user's computer.
PREVENTION: Windows users should check for a file named shimgapi.dll in the system directory, and update their AV software.
No... Windows users should buy a fucking MAC! Case closed, says the Doctor.

on the right foot...
I always like to start of the semester by making a good, positive first impression on my students by arriving to the first class 20 minutes late. It happened last semester too. It’s never my fault... it’s the damned train, and the fact that there is no “wiggle room” built into my schedule in the morning... I leave the train, hop the subway, walk to work with maybe 5 - 10 minutes to spare. Which means that if the train is 15 minutes late, then *I* am 15 minutes late.
Or in the case of today... even longer.
And the reason for the delay was what they kindly call a “pedestrian accident”. Which of course means that some poor guy got killed by a train. Not MY train... but a train up ahead of ours. Which meant we had to stop for about 10-15 minutes, then BACK UP for about 10 minutes so that we could take another track.
And I always think when I hear about train accidents like that – “Shit, I hope that a train that *I* am on never hits and kills anyone.” Because I know exactly what will happen. Despite the tragic nature of the event, the only thing I’ll feel is irritated and inconvenienced, and then I’ll have to deal with the self-loathing that comes from being disgusted with myself for having such a reaction.
I was right.

no field lubrication...
That phrase has been hanging around in my weblog “notebook” – the MS Word document where I write all of my entries before transferring them to my various journals – waiting for a chance to be a title. I don’t know what it means, but I like the way it sounds. I saw it on a sign on the machinery underneath one of the commuter trains I ride every day. I suppose it means that you shouldn’t lubricate that particular part of the train while it’s in a field. I dunno. What I’m trying to say here is that I’m back on the train (“yeah...”) on my way to work for the first day of a new semester. Modern Physics in the morning... Applied Calculus in the afternoon. Two and a half hours of Astronomy on Thursdays. It’s hard for me to get excited about any of it. Like I said before... part of my brain is already outta here... living down in Alabama where it’s nice and warm.
The weather there... oh... I didn’t talk much about it while I was sending my little travel updates, but... oh my GOD. One night while we were there the temps dipped down to something that felt almost like winter and made you want to put a jacket on. But the rest of the time...55º... 65º... 60º. In JANUARY, people! The Home Depot “garden center” was open... with flowers BLOOMING outside of it. We actually saw azaleas blossoming. In JANUARY!!
Oh... I am going to like it there!
Especially given what the weather has been like HERE lately. It snowed like 4” – 6” while we were gone, and that melted and refroze a few times before we got home, leaving us with what is essentially a GLACIER where our driveway should be. And the temperature hasn’t gotten above 20º since we got home, so there is NOTHING we can do about it. You put salt on the fucking thing and the crystals just burrow little individual tunnels down into it, but not enough ice ever melts to fucking dissolve the salt so it can do more than that. So now we have a glacier-with-little-holes-in-it where our driveway should be, and we have to get a big running start with our car from the street and just kinda crash into the driveway and slide up the hill to park. Great fun.
Anyway... I could go on like this forever. I was just astounded by the weather down there. Somehow I never knew... or never really thought that much about it. I mean... I knew that the South had mild winters, and that it never snowed there... it just never occurred to me how... tropical it was down there. Flowers! Palm trees! It was like I was in the Caribbean or something. You know what it was like... it was like Gilligan’s Island. Think about Gilligan’s Island for a minute... the weather was like... it was like they didn’t even HAVE weather. Don’t you get the idea that Gilligan’s Island was always the same temperature... the temperature of the inside of a TV studio? Maybe it rained now and then, but when it did, it was still 72 degrees.
And people keep saying – “Oh, but you just wait until the summer... ooh you’re going to be miserable.> Yeah... you know what? Bring it on. Turn it up. I got the central air... I got the sunroof... I can take whatever you got. And you don’t have to fucking shovel “hot”... y’know?
Enough about the fucking weather, yeah? I have WORK to do people!

last day...
nine days with these freaking KIDS and not a single break. i forget what it's like to THINK, y'know? i enjoy thinking... i get PAID to think. and i think it's been more than a week since i've had a complete thought begin and end in my head without being interrupted by something.
anyway... classes start tomorrow, which means that i'll be able to sit on a train in the quiet and write and work and THINK.
whoever invented 'vacations' clearly did NOT have kids.

a good thing gone bad...
I headed over to the iTunes music store to download snippets from Ani DiFranco’s new album “Educated Guess” and I have to say... I don’t think I’ve ever heard such a talented musician produce an album that was such unmitigated crap from beginning to end. I mean... I know this is only based on 30 second excerpts of each song, but unless the album consists of 14 awesome songs each of which has 30 seconds of crap in the middle, I stand by my assessment. She’s apparently given up playing chords on her guitar in favor of jerky, unmusical, dissonances... and she seems to get far too big a kick out of singing harmony with herself at some unpleasant interval three octaves above the melody (if you can call it a melody) in EVERY song. The only thing that breaks up the monotonous unpleasantness of the songs are the three “spoken word” pieces. And aren’t THOSE always excruciating!
Anyway, thank you Apple and the iTunes music store for saving me $13.99 on THAT stinker.

About the last fucking thing in the world I want to be doing right now is lying in bed typing up syllabi... y'know? But classes start Monday, and if I don't get some shit ready real soon, I am very, very screwed.
My last semester as a college professor, and all my classes are gonna SUCK, I just know it. My sights are set beyond this place... the job, the house. It's hard to focus. I need to get organized, or... something.

home...
no time to relax, though. kid stayed up until almost 10:00... too long of a nap, plus the time change. now i should probably straighten the house a little before bed, since the cleaners are coming tomorrow. i should at least clean up the week’s worth of cat vomit. the wife has to get right to work on an overdue project. i have to take the 4 y.o. to daycare tomorrow because we extended our stay by two days and my wife’s drives license expired. which reminds me... i should wrap her birthday presents too.

quickupdate #6...
After all of the “upgrades” were said and done, the price tag of the house was only kicked up by $11,000. Yeah... I know... “ONLY”? But I was expecting more like $15,000. Anyway, it’s done and I’m exhausted. Tomorrow we drive to New Orleans and fly out on Thursday.
One good thing about the exhaustion... I had about the best meditation session EVER while lying in bed earlier tonight. Nearly complete sensory dissolution. I guess it helps that I’m about *this far* from feeling like that just walking around all day!

quickupdate #4...
we’ve picked out our bricks, our shutters, our door... our cabinets and hardware and countertops (Corian!)...our tubs and showers and vanities... our appliances (black)... our interior doors and knobs.
today we will choose our hardwoods, tiles, carpets... our paint colors... our lighting... god knows what else. we dread the price tag!
it’s all kinda fun, but if i have to take these kids to another restaurant, i’m going to kill myself.

quickupdate #3...
after a grueling couple of days of looking at houses, looking at houses, and looking at houses, we’ve chosen a builder, a floor plan, a development, and a lot. we’re spending a little more money than we planned, but we’re getting a damned nice house on a cul-de-sac with sidewalks... really nice. now it’s time to pick out colors, tiles, carpet, paint, brick, cabinets... oy.
we may be extending our trip a few days to get everything finished. we haven’t decided. stay tuned...

reminder to self... never let wife have only set of car keys. trapped at a rest stop in the middle of mississippi. luckily it was 65 degrees, so sitting around waiting for the locksmith was kinda nice.
met with two builders. big-cheap-cookie-cutter builder and smaller-nicer-expensiver-custom house builder. guess which we liked better?

stupid american network tv chuckleheads...
Did anybody catch the horrible American TV “remake” of the BBC series “Coupling”?? You had to look fast and not blink, it was on for maybe three episodes before it was cancelled. Why? because it sucked, that’s why. It sucked hard.
The thing is... the BBC version is hilarious.... consistently laugh-out-loud funny. It was running on PBS here, and it was so good that we bought the complete series on DVD. And the American version used the SAME FUCKING SCRIPTS!! And yet it was a big, fat, stinking BOMB. Why? Why, why, why??
Because it’s a simple fact of life that some things are only funny when British people say them. It’s true. And if American TV Executive Chuckleheads were smart enough to realize this, they could have saved themselves a boatload of money producing a whole new version and just run the ORIGINAL damned series here in the US, and it would have been a success.

I need to be in charge of more things like this, dammit.

the darkness...
I kept reading and hearing about this UK band, “The Darkness” in Rolling Stone and whatnot... everybody raving about how great they are... this sort of tongue-in-cheek revisitation of 80’s hair metal excess, but a good band in their own right... somewhere between a spoof and a homage. Apparently they’ve caused quite a stir in the UK, in a love-em-or-hate-em kind of way. Well, they were on Letterman last night, and I have to say... I was seriouslyunderwhelmed.
Best as I can tell, they amount to little more than a serviceable Cindarella-esque mid-80’s rock band... dressed in what appears to be clothing culled from Ace Frehley’s donation box to the Salvation Army, and playing the kind of 3-chord I-IV-V rock ballad that was mercilessly clogging up the airwaves in the glory days of MTV. They actually reminded me a lot of the kinds of bands all my friends were in during my college days, when this kind of music was essentially dead, but being kept on lifesupport by dive-bar cover bands. The lead singer’s voice, which I’d heard so much about and expected to be a ballsy, throaty, too-tight-spandex-pants wail... turned out to be a kind of limp falsetto warble at best.
I dunno... if it’s supposed to be a joke, it’s not very funny. (It’s certainly no “Spinal Tap.”) And if it’s supposed to be serious, it’s not very good. If you want to hear some mediocre 80’s “hard rock”, you’re better off digging into your vinyl collection and dusting off that old copy of “Pyromania” by Def Leppard. Come on now... you know you’ve got it.

come ON people...
I know blog templates and XML and cascading stylesheets and whateverthefuck... all these are very, very exciting things, but I'm getting really sick of the fact that about 25% of the weblogs I visit are absolutely unviewable as a result of all the extraneous web-spooge that people insist on putting in there. Not everybody uses Internet Explorer version Now.now on a Windows XP machine, folks. People use Netscape, Mozilla, Safari... remember us Mac folks, eh? I know we all want our blogs to look nice, but turn down the bells-and-whistle factor a little and you may find your traffic going UP rather than down as a result of people actually being able to READ your fucking pages. How 'bout it?

what? but, I'm not actually a writer, you see...
I got a phone call today from a major NYC theatre company offering me a commision to write a play.
No... you are NOT in the wrong weblog.
It's an annual competition for plays about science and scientists, and my proposal was selected to receive a development grant.
Yeah... holy fuck.
I always do these things and then wind up with "buyer's remorse" over them. "Oh yay! My application got accepted.... oh... oh... shit." So now I've gotta spend one day a week this semester working on my play. Do you hear that?? Working on my PLAY. Like I'm not enough of an elistist snob fuck as it is. "Sorry... can't talk now... have to go work on my PLAY... I'm an artisté, don't you know!". Jesus.

talk...?
The only big news for today was a trip to the mall to the AT&T Wireless store. New cellphones for everybody! My wife lost her old one, and my zero needed to be pushed with a key, so we figured it was time to change plans... new plans = new phones. They are pretty spiffy... color screens... obnoxious musical ringtones... Space Invaders games. All the really important stuff. Apparently you can use them to talk to people over long distances as well!

savasana... the corpse pose...
I’ve been thinking about yoga a lot lately.... I should be doing yoga. I like yoga. For the little while I did yoga, at my flaky new-age school where we were FORCED to yoga, I actually got something out of it. You know... flexibility and all that. I’m not interested in PowerYoga or WeightLossYoga or StandOnYourFuckingHead Yoga... just some simple positions to add a physical dimension the meditation practice that I’m also NOT doing but should be.
But when the hell am I gonna do yoga? And WHERE? And pants... I don’t have any good yoga PANTS, y’know? I don’t wanna be doing yoga on a throw rug in the basement in my fucking jammies, for christ’s sake. I need one of those blue rubbery mats and a pair of $65 hemp drawstring YogaPants. Only then will I be a truly obnoxious urban hipster yuppie YogaGuy.
I’d better get it out of my system now, cuz I’m pretty sure that YogaGuy shit don’t fly down in Alabama!

Oh, no... no... not ME. I’ve added a new weblog to my favorite’s list. It wasn’t until the entry that began with the line above that I decided to add a link here as well. The blog is called Belle de Jour - subtitled - Diary of a London Call Girl. (http://belledejour-uk.blogspot.com)
Yeah. I probably don’t need to say any more.
But I will. The writing is brilliant. No, really. Ok... yeah there’s the fact that it’s about a...well... a prostitute and all, but really.... it’s absolutely brilliant. It just got voted one of Britain’s Best Blogs or something by The Guardian in the UK. I had already been reading it for 2 or 3 weeks, though... so I consider myself and early-adopter rather than a bandwagon-jumper.
Anyway check it out... it’s good stuff.

you just can’t keep up...
So... here’s the Doc, all excited about his 10 Gb iPod that he dropped $300 worth of his Xmas money on... having much more fun trying to fill it up than he has time to LISTEN to it, since he’s on vacation and never leaves the house...
And what do they announce at Macworld Expo this week?
A new 4 Gb “iPod Mini”... smaller and cuter and more colorful. Eh... that’s ok... 4 Gig is too small he says. Besides, $250 is way too much money to spend for only 4 Gigs.
But wait there’s more...
Apparently Apple has figured that their product line shouldn’t have a 4 Gb iPod for $250 and a 10 Gb for $299... that would cut too much into the sales of the 10 Gb model. So they DISCONTINUED the 10 Gb model in favor of a 15 Gb model.
The new price of the 15 Gb model?
$299
Fuck, fuck... fuckfuckfuck!
You mean if I had waited TWO FUCKING WEEKS, I could have had 50% MORE STORAGE space for the SAME FUCKING PRICE???
FUCK!
I know, I know... I’ve already been practically complaining about the fact that I can’t even find 10 Gigs worth of worthwhile music to put into this thing as it is... but you know... it’s just the IDEA...
fuck.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen... it’s time for another round of everybody’s favorite wintertime family-fun game - ”Virus Go Round!!” Tell them what we’re playing for this week...
”WELLLL, this week we’re playing for... an oldie but a goodie... THE 24-HOUR STOMACH FLU!!!”
{cue applause}
Wow, that’s just great. Well, Dad – you got your turn at the big porcelain game board on Saturday, so Mom... you’re up next.
Stay tuned next week when we’ll see who our next big winner is, and whether Mom or Dad wins the draw to play our Bonus 2:00 AM Lightning Round of ”Clean the Vomit off the Children!!!”

yeah, cuz that NEVER happens...
My wife TiVo'd some movie last night called "Autumn in New York" or something like that... it starred Richard Gere and Winona Ryder. (?!) The plot synopsis on TiVo said...
"A wealthy restaurateur unexpectedly falls in love with a free-sprited woman half his age"
To which my reaction was... what exactly is unexpected about falling in love with free-spirited women half your age?? Hell, it happens to me a couple times a week. Who the hell else are you gonna fall in love with? Uptight spinsters? "Richard Gere falls in love with a greying uptight spinster." Now THAT would be unexpected.
D.
PS: And who would have thought that the word "restaurateur" didn't have an "n" in it? But it doesn't... I looked it up. Likewise, unexpected!!

pictionary rant...
We played Pictionary on New Year’s Eve, and I almost lost. Our team pulled it out in the end, which is good, because I fucking HATE losing at Pictionary. You have no idea. And it’s just Pictionary... I don’t mind losing at Trivial Pursuit or Taboo or Scattergories or whatever. But not Pictionary. Why? Because it shouldn’t happen. And it never used to happen. When Pictionary first came out, I was unstoppable. People would argue over whose team I was on, and they’d NEVER let me play with my wife on the same team. Because I can draw like fuck people... give me a pencil and 60 seconds, and I’ve got the clue. No problem.
But then they went and fucked with the game. In the first edition of Pictionary... maybe one clue out of five was an “All Play” clue... where all of the teams draw at once and whoever gets the clue FIRST wins. Now I hate these things, because I can draw WELL... but I can’t draw FAST. I put too much thought and detail into my drawings to execute them in 8 seconds. So I seldom win an All Play clue. Which wasn’t a big deal in the first edition of the game, because that only fucked my up on one clue out of five or so.
Well in the second edition of the game, things changed. Now something like FOUR out of five clues are “All Play” clues. This levels the playing field so that losers who can’t draw have a better chance of beating out those of us who can. And suddenly I can’t run the board like I used to be able to, and suddenly I can’t win the fucking game, and it’s no fun for me anymore, because I never get to DRAW anything for more than 10 seconds.
And now they’ve gone and fucked with it AGAIN and added a little die that you roll that tells you that you have to draw with your eyes closed using your left hand, or that you have to draw with your feet or with the pencil sticking out of your ass or something. We played for 45 minutes last night before I got to open my fucking eyes even ONCE. I mean... come on! What the fuck was wrong with Pictionary in the first place? All you pussies who can’t draw got tired of losing? Tough shit. You don’t see them changing the rules of Trivial Pursuit so that stupid people can win, do you?
So, we played Pictionary last night, and my team won, and I didn’t even have any fun because I never ONCE got a pencil and 60 seconds and a chance to actually really DRAW something. Which means they’ve taken something I used to enjoy and something I used to be good at and ruined it completely.
Thanks Parker Brothers.
Or Milton, or Bradley, or whoever the fuck is responsible...
Thanks a lot.

Now that I have my little pocket digital camera, I'm gonna be snapping random pictures like a nut everywhere I go. Check out the link in my sidebar to "secondary visual cortex" - my photojournal, where you'll find some new pix from Xmas. Poor quality, dubious subject matter... just like my writing!

that’s it... you are grounded...!
We came home from our week-long vacation tonight, and I headed back to the bedroom where our depressed cat lives. What did I find there? Let’s see... vomit and urine everywhere.... lamps knocked to the floor... music blaring on the clock radio...
We think she’s trying to prepare us for when we come home to our teenaged children after a week away.
She may have just bought herself a ticket to the Big Ranch In The Country.
Urine on the BED?? Yeah. The camel’s back has been broken.

Well, I got my iPod, and I have two things to say.
First - this thing is such an unbelievable pleasure to touch and to hold that the folks in Cupertino should put away the silicon chips and start designing sex toys. Really.
Second - 10 Gigabytes is an IMMENSE fuckload of music! I just put 65 CD's onto mine and it's only half full. What the hell do the people with the 40 Gig model fill theirs up with? Jeez.
Anyway, we're back in NY... more later.

happy... whatever...
I’ve never really understood the whole “New Year’s/New Year’s Eve” holiday. I don’t think I’ve ever in my life had one that was special or celebratory or noteworthy in any way. I resent the arbitrariness of it... it’s a calendar... who really cares? Every day is a year later than it was a year ago on that day... just because some Roman guy decided to call THIS one the “first day”... big deal. January 1st has no historical, religious, or astronomical significance.... it’s just... nothing. And as far as what you’re “supposed to do” on New Year’s Eve... it all seems designed for the kind of people whose idea of “fun” is to pack themselves into crowded, noisy places – get fuckfaced-drunk – and shout ”WHOOOOOOO!” loudly and frequently.
In case you can’t tell from reading my journal... I am NOT one of those kinds of people.
So last night we played Pictionary until 12:30 with a break to drink fake champagne and to kiss someone not because we really wanted to, but because a clock and a calendar TOLD us to. (Which, given my nature, makes me very much NOT want to.)
And now... It’s 7:30 AM... 2004... I’m up with the kid... and I’m very, very tired.
Anyway... “Happy New Year” dear readers!
Yeah.
