closing time...

The wife left today on a 5 day trip to NY to close on the new house.

TIme from wife's departure to first screaming tantrum...?

4 minutes.

Monday, June 27

the old man and the seafood...

Last night for dinner I made myself salmon stuffed with crab florentine. Don't be too impressed... it was store-made stuff... frozen. Not like... "Mrs. Paul's" frozen, but... still, frozen. It was pretty good, although the middle was only barely luke-warm after I cooked it. That shouldn't be a problem... should it?

Yeah...

So I awoke at 2:00 AM with my stomach doing somersaults and making horrifying noises and the taste of salmon stuffed with crab florentine creeping up the back of my throat. Then I proceeded to spend the next hour or so in and out of the bathroom, 100% convinced that it was coming back upstream any minute. It never did.

Nonetheless, I spent a good time lying in bed being nauseus and freaking out. A sample of my drowsy, internal monologue...

"Oh fuck... that salmon wasn't cooked. Salmon! SALMONELLA!! I've fucking poisoned myself. I don't feel quite right. I should just go to sleep. (...doze...) My face is getting numb! Shit. I'm dying. What are the symptoms of salmonella? I'd throw up once or twice before I died, right? You don't just up and die, do you? I mean, I know you can die from it, but you get a little warning, right? Maybe I should try to throw up again. (...doze...) FUCK! My HAND is numb now! It's in my bloodstream and it's killing me..."

Needless to say, I'm not feeling particularly well rested today.

Nobody fucking blogs on Sunday... what's the deal? I know none of you heathens on my blogroll are in CHURCH!!

slogging along...

Things are moving towards the move extremely slowly. No movement on the house in Alabama... no firm closing date on the house in NY. As of yesterday they didn't even have the C.of.O. ready yet... it was promised on Monday. We're still shooting for a closing date on Thursday or Friday next, but my wife is driving up there with my car, so she needs at least three days notice, which nobody seems able to give her. Which means she'll probably leave on Monday with her fingers crossed. The following weekend being a holiday, the next date we could get is July 5th - any later than THAT and our interest-rate-lock expires and we have to pay a $1500 penalty.

Can somebody explain to me why this process has to be so fucking complicated??

The other thing this means is that I'm facing as much as a week alone with the kids, which will be a new record - assuming everyone lives. Anybody want to come babysit for me for a couple of days?

The date we are scheduled to load up the moving van is July 7th. Hopefully we will actually OWN a house to move into by then. We still have a shitload to do. We've packed up about 50% of the stuff in every room of the house, the 2 car garage is about packed full of boxes, and the house is just now emptied to the point that it's starting to look like a NORMAL person's house.

Other than all the moving stuff, which I'd rather avoid talking/thinking about... there isn't much going on. This leaves me with very little to blog about, so if anybody has any "requests" just let me know.

i mean... now they are gonna be outnumbered...!

Twice in the past few weeks I've found out that a couple who are our peers are pregnant with their third child. And when I find out I have to reply with the socially obligatory "Oh, wow, congratulations!" when what I really want to say is, "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHY?!!!"

It's not like they don't know what causes it nowadays people.
a whole different kind of "hot"...

We have a lot of work to do still to get ready for the move. One thing on the list is making some repairs to the Playhouse. (Check the December-January archives to learn more about the playhouse that we spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of man-hours on, only to move 6 months later.) So I headed out today with my manly powertools to fix the broken step on the ladder.

I shit you not, I broke a sweat just untangling the extension cord.

How the fuck do HOUSES get built in this oppressive, steamy swamp??
most pointless souvenier... ever!

One of the places we went on our road trip was the Abraham Lincoln Presidential LIbrary and Museum in Springfield, IL. It was a pretty nicely done museum... the multimedia shows were cool. I'm not much into the history stuff, but I had a good time.

Anyway, whenever we are on vacation my wife insists on picking up these souveniers... I think it's a leftover thing from childhood or something. It's this machine that you put 2 quarters and a penny in, and you turn this big wheel and it squishes the penny flat and imprints it with a picture of Niagra Falls or Royal Gorge or the Louvre or wherever you happen to be. We get one of these everywhere we go, then my wife puts it in her purse and it gets lost before we even get back home. Whatever...

But the point of this story is... what can you get for 51 cents from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential LIbrary and Museum in Springfield, IL?

An ABRAHAM LINCOLN SOUVENIER PENNY!!

Shit, skip the machine... I'll sell you five for a quarter.

first order of business...

... now that I'm back from my vacation is to go on a FAST. Nothing but water and unleavened bread for the next two weeks, I swear. Spending a week at my mother-in-law's house is like being a houseguest at Wille fucking Wonka's.

Tuesday, June 21

back...

Chicago to Nashville on Monday... Nashville to Mobile today...

*shudder*

I'm back, and I've been welcomed into the waiting, open arms of my newly repaired iBook.

Must rest now.

Friday, June 17

take that, marketing bozos...

The highlight for the 6 y.o. for this trip was a promised trip to American Girl Place in Chicago. I have mixed feelings about the status-symbolness of these little historical dolls, but the wife thinks they are borderline educational, so we let our daughter save up her money for one.

It's very clear that the historical dolls were created so there would be one redhead, one blonde... one girl with glasses... one black girl... a latina... even a native american doll. That way every girl would find a doll who looked enough like her that she could "identify" with it. And so what doll did our pale, blonde, freckled Irish-Welsh little moppet choose...?

Josefina!

Priceless.

from the back seat... how to end any argument...

6yo: ... because all of the planets are the same age.
2yo: Pluto is not da same age.
6yo: Yes, all of the planets are the same age.
2yo: Not Pluto.
6yo: Yes. Pluto was the last planet to be SEEN, but it was made at the same time.
2yo: Pluto was not made at da same time.
6yo: Daddy, weren't all the planets made at the same time?
Dad: Yes, all the planets are about 5 billion years old.
6yo: See? Pluto WAS made at the same time.
2yo: (pause...) I have a giant FOOOOT!!

the King of tacky decor...

If you're about my age, you probably had an aunt or uncle you used to visit when you were 8. They were your "rich" aunt and uncle... which means they had a "club basement" with a TV in it... and carpet... shag carpet... perhaps even on the walls and ceiling.

Picture that aunt and uncles' house, circa 1977.

You have now saved yourself a trip to Graceland.

Saturday, June 11

smells like global ecological irresponsibility...

I was looking through the paper the other day... Father's Day is coming up you know... so the department store ads all have ties and cheap cologne on sale. There are all sorts of weird "sponsored" colognes out there nowadays... named after car models and such. One of the brands on sale was "Hummer" cologne.

Hummer...

I'm sure it smells great... really manly and all... problem is, you have to use a whole gallon of it every day to get it to work.

Friday, June 10

twelve days...

The closing for our house in NY has been pushed back an unknown number of days. As a result, the vacation we were planning for later in the summer is happening now. With less than 48 hours notice. I give you the next 12 days in the life of Dave...

3. Visit Graceland
4. Drive to Springfield, IL
5. Visit New Abraham Lincoln museum, drive to Chicago
6. Inlaws in Chicago
7. American Girl Place in Chicago
8. Inlaws in Chicago
9. Inlaws in Chicago
10. Drive to Nashville
11. Drive home
12. Kill self

A vacation! Whee!!!
apples vs. pc's... response...

I've gotten a couple of notes of the variety - "If Apples are so much better than PC's, how come I'm always reading about people needing major hardware repairs on their Macs?"

It's a fair remark - but one thing needs to be made clear. Apple is BOTH a hardware and a software company. When people go on and on about Macs being better than PCs, they are usually making a comment about the OPERATING SYSTEM. The Mac OS is so far superior to Windows that it's not even funny. (People who disagree with this... keep your mouths shut... I hold you in the same regard as I hold Creationists!)

Now people using Windows... they might use computers made by Dell, Compaq, eMachines... whomever. Some of those might make good, reliable hardware... some might be less reliable. I'm honestly not sure how Apple stacks up in terms of hardware issues with the big PC makers. It's my impression that OVERALL, Apple makes pretty solid machines... but they also are not above churning out their share of lemons.

I've had Macs that ran for 15 years without a hardware problem. I've dragged them out of storage buildings where they've sat for 3 or 4 years, given them a hard smack on the case and had them boot up and run perfectly. I've also had a laptop that needed to be sent back 4 times in one year, and this iBook is going to be on its THIRD logic board. But I'll continue buying Apples as long as the user experience outstrips Windows by as much as it has for the past 2 decades. I find the act of using this Sony Vaio PURE TORTURE, and it's all because of the still-clunky-and-ass-backwards Windows GUI. It's just UGLY and inelegant and clumsy and I'd gladly trade an annual hardware problem for the DAILY frustration of a buggy OS... not to mention the spyware and viruses that you people have to deal with.

So, yes... the Apple iBook is a cheap piece of white plastic CRAP... I'll grant you that. That's why this Christmas I'll be buying myself a nice shiny 12" aluminum PowerBook... and 51 weeks a year I will be loving EVERY MINUTE of it.
fucking, fuck FUCK!!

Why is it that every time I decide to move across the fucking country my fucking laptop up and COMPLETELY FUCKING DIES on me not TWO WEEKS BEFORE?? Is there some connection??

Do I really NEED to be dealing with shit like this right now? NO I DO NOT!!

Fuck...

it's like morrisey said...

I was reading my online news sites today and I came across an article in Wired Magazine that quoted a guy I used to work with.

IN WIRED MAGAZINE!!

Damn... that makes me mad. I'm an awful person, aren't I?

Wednesday, June 8

a very brief review of the new White Stripes album...

Buy it.

It has marimbas.

Elsewhere, you will read comparisons to "Exile on Main Street". These are not unfounded.

When you find yourself singing along with a song the first time you hear it... this is a very good sign.
this is why dave needs a job...

I was chatting with someone online at around 11:30 last night. I shifted on the sofa to lean sideways with my laptop and something poked me in the neck under my chin. I felt around to figure out what it was... it was the tag to my shirt.

My shirt was on backwards.

IT WAS 11:30 AT NIGHT, people.

Fucking sad.

Monday, June 6

the rumors were true..

(Most of you can safely ignore this post) I was skeptical, but it turns out all of the leaks for the past few weeks were right. Apple Computers are dumping IBM and making the transition to Intel/Pentium chips over the next two years.

How will they do it? Well, it turns out there have been guys in a bunker in Cupertino compiling the MacOS to run on the Intel architecture FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS!! In fact, Steve Jobs stopped in the middle of the Keynote address to mention that - oh, by the way... this presentation I'm been giving has been running the MacOS on a 3.6GHz Pentium 4 all morning. IT'S ALREADY DONE!! Then they brought over a guy from Wolfram to announce that it took them 5 days to port Mathematica to the new architecture. FIVE DAYS.

Steve Jobs, you are a fucking genius.

I don't know HOW he's going to brush aside all the negative "RISC is better than CISC" propaganda of the last 10 years, (**) but... if anyone can do it, it's The Steve.

Fuck, this doesn't mean I have to have one of those ugly "Intel Inside" stickers on my next Mac, does it?? Maybe he'll loan them some designers to come up with a spiffier logo.

A good report of the keynote can be found at engadget.

Dr. Dave

(**) Actually, I do know how. LIke the article above says - they'll simply keep repeating "Pentium runs cooler than PPC" and even though hertz-for-hertz, PowerPC still beats Pentium (as in a 2 Ghz PPC actually runs more instructions per second than a 3 or 4 GHz Pentium) IBM hasn't been able to deliver a G5 that will run in a notebook without causing it to burst into flames. Steve will simply stress that portables are an important part of Apple's business, and that if they don't make the change NOW, they are in danger of falling behind Windows in the portable market. And we'll all smile and nod, becuase He's Steve and we're not.

i'd rather pay off my CAR, thanks...

We got a catalog in the mail from this pen place yesterday. I assume it's because we're on the Levenger mailing list, but this place makes Levenger look like Office Fucking Depot. I'm sorry... I'm as much a materialist as the next guy, but... anybody who spends more than $5000 on a fucking PEN deserves to be STABBED TO DEATH WITH IT!
the good, the bad, and the puffy...

I TiVo'd that show "Hit Me Baby One More Time" last night. At least I think that's what it was called. The premise was that they resurrect some has-been artists to perform their big hit song, and then have them cover a current pop song and then... well, I don't know... maybe they pick a winner or something... I never made it past the first segment because it was so HORRIFYINGLY BAD. It was like karaoke, only worse... because you expect the person who actually wrote and performed the song to NOT suck as bad as a karaoke performer. But you'd be wrong. After watching the puffy lead singers from Loverboy and Flock of Seagulls grunt thier way through "Workin' for the Weekend" and "I Ran" respectively... I couldn't bear another minute of it.

Then later I was flipping channels and I came across the Eagles "Farewell Tour #1" on Bravo. I was pleasantly surprised and a little befuddled. It sounded far better than it had any right to. Apparently, musicians with TALENT can manage to NOT SUCK when they get old.

I especially enjoyed the guitar solo to Hotel California... not a single fucking note out of place, man... cuz you know... any improvising on THAT number and people would be demanding their $300 back!
navigating the fantasy/reality line with toddlers...

Little Guy wakes up from his nap yesterday...

LG: "Me. Haff. Bad. Dream."
ME: Aww.. you had a bad dream?
LG: "Ya."
ME: What was your dream about?
LG: (pause...) "Tigers!" (makes clawing hand motions)
ME: Oh, no... tigers? Were they SCARY tigers?
LG: "Ya."
ME: Oh no. Were they chasing you?
LG: (pause...) "No, Daddy... It was a DREAM."

Right. Of course. How silly of me.

new mini-careers...

In my neverending quest to beef up the CV without writing any real papers or doing any real work, I've figured out a way to add two new writing projects to the list. One is a secondary weblog where I'm writing little science essays that I can't figure out where to publish. So I just stick them on this other blog and submit them to monthly cool-science-writing-roundups. Eventually I can add a section to my CV that says ONLINE PUBLICATIONS: Collection of essays on science and the history of science featured in Cool Science Writing Online, #29, #30, #31, #33, #40.

Then yesterday, I discovered that a fairly renown software company keeps an online encyclopedia of physics and mathematics, and that the physics encyclopedia is just FULL of blank entries! They accept submissions from outside, and since the entries are fairly short, I could easily get 20 or so submissions written with a minimum of effort. So, yet again... ONLINE PUBLICATIONS: Contributor to physics.stuff.com, a comprehensive encyclopedia of physics and mathematics developed by RenownSoftwareCompany. (40+ entries)

Being lazy and a procrastinator... there is NOTHING that makes me happier than having lots and lots of little tiny projects to bounce back and forth between.

i suppose we should be proud of him for trying, at least...

From the President's press conference on TUESDAY... in response to a question about the Amnesty International "gulag" allegations...

In terms of, you know, the detainees, we've had thousands of people detained. We've investigated every single complaint against the detainees.

It seemed like to me they based some of their decisions on the word of and the allegations by people that were held in detention, people who hate America, people that have been trained in some instances to disassemble [sic], that means not tell the truth.

Actually, George... "disassemble" means "to take apart"... "DISSEMBLE" means to not tell the truth. You know how I know?

Dictionary.com's word of the day for MONDAY? Yup... dissemble!

Coincidence? Right.

Now I ask you... how cute is it that the President subscribes to the Word of the Day email to try to improve his vo-cab-u-la-mary, and then tries to use the new words in a sentence the very next day? Even if he does bungle it up. What a lovable little chucklehead.
