local celebrities...

At the risk of blowing my cover, our new home is located but a few miles away from a certain motorcycle shop featured in a certain fairly popular cable TV series where they, as far as I can tell, build motorcycles and swear at one another. Yesterday we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of "Paul Sr." driving through our village in an orange-flamey-vintage-hot-rod-thingy.

I think that's probably fairly impressive... to someone... right?
movin' on DOWN...

I mowed my own lawn today.

Being middle class sucks.

translation? old guy making last grasp at youth...

GUITARIST: Experienced guitarist, new to area, seeks singer/songwriter to form acoustic duo. Family man, looking for a fairly low-key situation... a couple of practices, maybe one or two open mikes or coffee house gigs a month. Musical tastes range from the Indigo Girls and Ani to SRV to Zeppelin and Floyd to Ryan Adams to the White Stripes. Interested in both originals and creatively re-imagined acoustic covers. (Think Tori Amos's version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit"). Email or IM science_director@yahoo.com

oooooh.... aaaaaaah....

Updates will be sparse whilst I lie upon my oh-so-soft furnitures and stare at the piles of boxes, wishing them to magically unpack themselves.

huzzah! huzzah!

THE TRUCK IS HERE!!!!

Tuesday, July 26

we've heard this one before...

The mover has PROMISED us a truck tomorrow...

Do I get my hopes up?

Monday, July 25

boing, boing, boing...

I need to see if someone makes laptop screen clamps or shock absorbers or something, because riding on these old trains... this can’t be good for the display. My iBook's screen is going to snap right the hell off.
express train to the pod farm...

I swear, one day I'm going to stow aboard a train at the end of the line, when they warn you it's going to "The Yaa'hd Facility"... because I think where it really goes is to the underground genetic engineering complex where they grow NYC women (who are so inhumanly and inhumanely beautiful that it hurts to look at them) in pods before Cyberfashionetics Corp lets them loose on the streets wearing clothes and shoes and hairstyles that EVERYONE MUST HAVE BECAUSE THE CLONE WOMEN SAY SO!!!

Also... "Clone Women" aside, after living in the South for a year, every women in Manhattan looks like she's from Europe. I can't explain it, but it's true.
personal belongings I miss the most...in no particular order...

1) the TiVo (the commercials! Make them STOP!)
2) the sofa (although after last night, the bed may have taken over this spot)
3) my iPod (I packed it?! WHAT??)
4) my beard trimmer ("It's ok kids... that's not the Unabomber... it's only Daddy")
5) the Q-tips ( MY BRAIN ITCHES!!)
hello, sweet rat race...

It's amazing the change in one's mental state that can arise from something as simple as getting up in the morning, putting on LONG PANTS for the first time in 3 months and then actually DOING SOMETHING before 9:00 in the morning. I wasn't even in my car yet, and I began to feel like a human being again.

It's 8:30 in the morning and I'm on my way into the city to take care of some paperwork and whatnot. It's going to be a longer commute than I thought. The drive to the station took 25 minutes. I was expecting a little less. There are other options to explore... other stations... even a commuter BUS that goes to Manhattan from up here. This is just the first trial run.

It's weird... even though I'm on a train that starts in NY and ends in NY, I'm riding on New Jersey Transit. Which means all new ticket machines and older trains than I'm used to. But still... this feels pretty familiar... and nice... why the fuck did I ever leave NY again?

Still no movers. Last night we were tucked in to our cozy inflatable mattress, only to wake up at 2:00 AM with our asses on the floor and our feet pointing at the ceiling. Apparently the thing has sprung not only a leak, but it has some sort of rupture between the main mattress and the "foam top" - causing a giant bubble to form on top of the mattress. The bed is now not only flaccid, but roughly spherical. Which means not only another $50 that we really can't afford, but we slept on the fucking BARE FLOOR for half the night.

WHERE THE FUCK IS OUR STUFF??

I'm not going to sit here and blog for the whole ride in... I have some work I need to do. I really only have a month to get ready for classes, since we're spending the last week or so of August in California for a wedding. (Just the wife and I! Woohoo!) I'm paying the price of developing courses so weird that no textbook can possibly suit the material, so I'm assembling my own "course packets" full of readings and whatnot. It doesn't seem like a big deal, but it involves a fair bit of editing (and a little bit of writing) on my part, and it needs to be DONE by September. Well... ok... I plan on releasing the packet in 2 parts, so it only has to be HALF done. But still... I have a lot of Aristotle and Galileo to plow through.

(There is a plug over there, I can SEE it... but there is no way to reasonably plug my laptop into it without running my cord in front of the emergency exit door. I don’t suppose the conductor would look to fondly on that, would she? Stupid New Jersey.)

I sat down on the train to find a nice flyer informing me that NJ Transit is conducting random baggage checks at random stations. I know they are doing it on the NY subways as well. That should make mass transit travel EVEN MORE PLEASANT!!

Ok... work now... really...

Urban Dave is BACK, baby!

the signs...

I had a dream last night that I went to a conference. For about 20 minutes of dreamtime, I sat in a hotel lobby and drank a "grande" Starbuck's tea and worked on my computer.

Uh... when you start FANTASIZING about sitting someplace quiet for 20 minutes... IT'S TIME TO GET AWAY!!!
things that 2 year olds don't need to know...

BOY: Daddy, can you tighten yis? (holds out blinky watch bracelet thing)
ME: Sure.
BOY: (pause) Hey. "Tighten" is a moon of Jutiper.
ME: Huh...? What do you... oh... no... "Titan" is a moon of SATURN.
BOY: Oh, yeah.

Saturday, July 23

when, if ever, that is...

Is there ANYONE out there who is farther along in life than me who can tell me WHEN it will happen that we can go on even the most MEAGER of "family outings" without it ending in a crying screaming crazy fit? Because really, I'd like to start marking off the days on my fucking calendar.

Friday, July 22

is today the day...?

Is the truck coming? It was supposed to be in NY last night. No word from the local agent, says the mover...

Let's all sit around and stare at the phone, shall we?

Wednesday, July 20

like a mantra... a vibrating, anal mantra...

I really don't understand what the puropse of fake blogs like this, since they don't have any ADS or anything on them... what is the purpose of stealing the clicks?? I do however enjoy the way it reads like Dadaist Vibrator Haiku.

(PS> I got there by clicking the "recently update blogs" on Blogger... NOT by Googling "anal vibrator", thankyouverymuch.)

d.
because being a guitarist is all about the stickers...

We were at a toy store last week and I picked up this sticker for my Strat's case...

I thought it fairly appropriate.
small town life... the good, the bad, and the shabby...

GOOD: The village has one of everything and it is CLOSE. Like... walking-distance close. Not that we've actually walked anywhere yet, but... you know... we could.

BAD: There is ONLY one of everything. And sometimes, I'd really just prefer Domino's.

GOOD: The village is so CUTE! We went to the public library the other day and it is in an old municipal building with the fire station and the town hall and it's tiny and old and CUTE!

BAD: Everything is also really shabby. I mean, part of it is that we're just not used to seeing things that are honest-to-goodness OLD after living in suburbia for 7 or 8 years. But you should see the book collection in this library. I mean... they are clearly TRYING, but the science section? How about a couple of books printed SINCE the manned Moon landing, hmm? Jeez. It makes me want to donate ALL OF MY BOOKS to the library!

GOOD: Mountains. I like being able to see the mountains around here. You can't quite see them from the Village, but if you drive a few miles east, you can. My wife, having lived out West, disparages them as "not real mountains" but I don’t care... I just like seeing that hint of a grey-blue ridge out on the horizon... it doesn't have to be the fucking Alps.

BAD: The tap water here SUCKS. It taste like the inside of an old dirty pipe. Probably with good reason...

STRANGE: We met the Mayor. She introduced herself as "Becky". She also runs the furniture store.

GOOD: The parks? How can a town with 3000 people justify having THREE public parks?? And yet, it does.

GOOD: The river. We have our own river. With two bridges. It gives the place a sense of geography that I really like.

BAD: Trucks go down Main Street at ALL HOURS of the night, about 60 yards from our house and make the windows rattle.

BAD: No sidewalks in the residential areas.

SURPRISING: Good Chinese food. Really good Chinese food.

BAD: New York accents

GOOD: At least I can understand what people are saying!

GOOD: New York style customer service. Brusque and FAST. I love that there are 4 people going at a time cutting meat in the deli counter. And I love that the "Hiiiiiiiiii, how are yyyeewwww t'dayyyyyy?" I had to endure in the South has been replaced by the much more efficient - "YEH??"

GOOD: It's not as hot as Alabama

BAD: It's still pretty fucking hot

UGLY: Oh, do I dread the snowfall totals come winter!
bits and pieces...

I just looked over my weblog last night and noticed I haven't posted anything substantial, as in... more than 3 or 4 lines... in MONTHS.

I need to remedy that

(but probably not today)

Oh... by the way... our stuff should be here on Friday. Yippee! Then I get to bitch about all the UNPACKING!

Tuesday, July 19

it's kinda like a buddhist monastary... only crabbier...

Our truck still seems to be in New Orleans w/o a driver. A tip for anyone about to move... ALLIED SUCKS!!!

The $125/day late fee should be just enough to cover all the chiropractor and orthopedist bills.
i can surf again...

I've been avoiding in-depth web contact in order to minimize the possibility of spoiler-stumblage while I was still reading "Harry Potter". Now I can get back to the real world.

Saturday, July 16

Hóla, keeeds... eet's BOBO!

Since we're currently in an empty house for a week while we wait for our moving van to catch up with us, the kids have precious few toys to play with. As a result, I have taken to entertaining them with a long, multicolored static-cling duster thingy which I have bent in half in the middle to form a snout and dubbed "Bobo, the Rainbow Llama".

The game involves much running in circles, and a high picthed cartoon-Mexican accent that I'm sure would offend many of our new Hispanic/Latino neighbors.

Good times.
møbilfäkta...

Stand back everybody... we're headed to IKEA... the first trip since we bought a minivan...

This could get ugly.
fully loaded, indeed...

Well, I'm not sure it was worth $40 to go see "Herbie: Fully Loaded" with the kids last night (although it was nice to sit in a CHAIR for 90 minutes) but I am now able to share with you all the answer to the question - "What, exactly, is it that Herbie is "fully loaded" WITH?"

The answer...?

LINDSAY LOHAN'S ENORMOUS BREASTS!!

Friday, July 15

well.. $125 will buy a nice IKEA chair...

We just found out from the trucking company that our belongings are still in New Orleans and probably won't be here for another 4 or 5 days.

The good news is that we get a $125 discount for every day they are late starting today, but that doesn't quite make up for the fact that I am TIRED OF SITTING ON THE FUCKING FLOOR!!!

Dammit.

Thursday, July 14

sweet, sweet access...

Time Warner came today, so you know what that means?

I HAVE INTERNET ACCESS!!

In the HOUSE!!

And I don't have to stand on the DECK anymore!!!

Nothing else is going on. I'm eating Chinese carryout and drinking vodka and gingerale from a styrofoam cup. Supposedly our THINGS will come tomorrow and we will have real food to eat and drink, and real things to eat and drink them from. We'll see.

Tuesday, July 12

home (sweet?) home...

We're here, we're all in one piece, we're living on cardboard boxes until Friday, we're suffering various degrees of buyer's remorse, we're tired from installing three window AC units today...

Our neighbors seem great... especially the ones to the left, who have already lent us a dorm fridge until ours gets here, and offered to help us run a water supply pipe for our icemaker. (He's in "plumbing supplies"!)

Our cable isn’t hooked up yet, so the only way I'm able to access the Net is to stand on the back deck and leech off a neighbor's wireless over the hill. And yes, I said STAND... if I sit, I lose the signal. All day long I've been downloading websites 5 at a time, then walking back inside to read them.

Walking around town has been like a game of How To Tell You're Not In Alabama Anymore. "Hey look, kids... a middle class black family!!"... "Oh wow... a real live JEW!"... "Oooo! Spanish newspapers!!" You don’t realize these things after a while. I saw a Sikh drive by today and I was like... "Crap, I don’t think I've seen a turban in 12 whole months!!"

Anyway. We're here. Updates will be slow until cable gets hooked up.

Stay tuned...

had enough...

Y'know... I know intellectually that he's just TWO and he's tired of being locked in a car and his nap schedule is screwed up and he's in a different hotel every night and that it is, in a very real sense really not his fault that he's having trouble getting to sleep at night, but... unfortunately that intellectual knowledge does not keep me from wanting to SMOTHER HIM WITH A PILLOW when he's still screaming at 10:00 PM.

Anyway... everyone else is asleep and I spent some time tonight sitting in the lobby of a (very old) Holiday Inn trying to decide whether to walk over to the TGIFriday's off the lobby and get liquored up, or to drive over to the strip club that Mapquest assures me is a mere 3.4 miles away.

In the end, I did neither. I'm currently sitting by the pool, catching up on my backlog of blog feeds, and writing one more quick post.

If the news media and our realtor are to be believed "Dennis" spared our former home and the surrounding area, which is good. The last thing we wanted to deal with was long-distance property repairs.

Speaking of the news... my wife insisted on listening to CNN all day on the Sirius radio in the car. Now, for a moment I will set aside the issues raised bay listening to TV ON THE RADIO and focus on just what CRAP passes for news on CNN. The people on that channel just talk and talk and talk and talk... it doesn’t matter if they are saying anything, it doesn't matter if anything is happening... they just prattle on and on and on... and most of what they say is just such INANE GARBAGE that it makes me FUCKING CRAZY. And then we got to listen to Anderson Cooper nearly get decapitated by a flying Ramada Inn sign like 7 times, after which Wolf Blitzer praised them all for their "fine journalism".

When the hell did "standing in the rain" become "fine journalism"??
if it's Sunday, it must be Roanoke...

Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham, Chatanooga...

Chatanooga, scary little chunk of Georgia, some city in Kentucky, Roanoke...

My back hurts.

Day three takes us from VA to Wilkes-Barre PA. As an east-coaster, the driving is easier for me once the states get small.

The cats are doing better than expected. The kids are just kids. I thought in the car yesterday... Do I really NEED something every 30 seconds and just not notice it because I'm doing it MYSELF??

Meanwhile, the house down in AL is about to be slammed by a category-4 hurricane. I wish we had a webcam setup there or something. Everyone say a prayer for our shingles!

Two more days. God my back hurts.

Thursday, July 7

moving day...

i feel like i'm going to DIE...

and i'm not even the one CARRYING all the furniture...

rush, rush, rush... pack, pack, pack... little shit left all over the house that needs to get done.

then the cleaning... ugh. the wife is doing that now. i'm at the hotel w/ the kids taking a break. it's 4:30... the movers have been there since 10:00. when i left they were all standing around, staring at the hot tub. don't ask ME dudes...

we've nearly filled the entire moving van. we have too much stuff. i DREAD hearing the total weight.

i'm really tired, and the 4-day road trip hasn't even started.

stay tuned for more too-exhausted-for-the-shift-key updates.

Tuesday, July 5

independence day recap (warning: shoots flaming balls)

PART 1: Have the kids watch Schoolhouse Rock in order to teach them the true meaning of the holiday, and to fill them full of the same idealistic crap they tried to feed us in the '70s.

PART 2: Blow things up.

Monday, July 4

moving update...

Today is Monday. The moving truck comes on Thursday. It is time to PACK. And not the little-here-little-there packing we've been doing for the last month. I mean... serious Oh-Shit-All-This-Crap-Has-To-Go-In-A-Box packing. So we have a schedule... Living Room and Office yesterday... Family Room and Playroom today... etc. I drained the hot tub and picked up the toys from the yard yesterday. The garage is almost done. At some point I have to brave the sweltering attic.

This is no fun, AT ALL!

I haven't even BEGUN thinking about the three days in the car with the kids. Didn't we just DO that?? Only this time, we get to add CATS to the equation.

I tell ya'... teleportation or magic or something would come in real handy right about now.

Friday, July 1

am i missing something...?

From a statement by the head of the Christian Coalition...

"As we see it, the key issues the Bush administration will have in mind when making nominations are overturning Roe vs. Wade, allowing the Ten Commandments and crèches in public places, and overturning the Massachusetts decision allowing same-sex marriage."

I'm sorry... I thought the Supreme Court's job was to make rulings on specific legal cases... not to make policy and rewrte laws. I thought the Republicans were AGAINST "activist judges" who "legislate from the bench"...?

Guess I must have misheard...
i've always wondered what it would be like to travel backwards in time...

Now it looks like I'll get to find out. Seems there's been a retirement from the Supreme Court, unfortunately IT WAS THE WRONG ONE!!

Message to Ms. O'Connor...NO! NOT YOU! THE OLD GUY!! THE DYING ONE!!

So, it looks like with TWO possible Bush nominees, this rightward swing of the political pendulum is going to last 30 years instead of the 10 that I had been hoping for. That's just dandy.

And in the meantime... just imagine the political shitstorm we'll have to endure for the next year. Bush nominated an arrogant right-wing ideologue to be Ambassador to the UN, for Christ's sake... can you IMAGINE what kind of judicial monster he's going to dig up to nominate to the Supreme Court??

Fuck. Me.
eek...

My wife closed on the house today. I am now a half-million dollars in debt.

Also... by some kind of weird quirk they have estimated our first-year taxes to be $10,000 !!! They won't really BE that much, but the bank is making us hold that much in escrow.

Jesus Christ... how are we going to pay $800 a month in property taxes?

Buyer's remorse, anyone??
